The pages appear to be torn from someone's diary:

 The first day in the month of Vecna's Terror
   A new mage is joining us today, Varanexus. My wife seems to think very highly of him. 
   She claims that he has some ideas that will greatly benefit us. Of course, 
   I am willing to give him a chance, as I would for anyone.

 The third day in the month of Vecna's Terror
   Varanexus has taken up residence in the underground level. I offered him a more comfortable room, 
   but he insisted that he needed his privacy. Furthermore, he has modified some of the empty rooms to serve as a laboratory for his work.
   He certainly is an intriguing man; I will be anxious to see the results of his work.

 The seventh day in the month of Vecna's Terror
   Varanexus has been keeping to himself. He is very evasive if I ask about the progress of his work. I am growing a bit suspicious of him, 
   but my wife insists that we must let him work in peace. I am very grateful for her advice. I believe if it were not for her, 
   I would have asked Varanexus to leave already, for his spirit does not seem to agree with my own.

 The tenth day in the month of Vecna's Terror
   I am shaking with rage as I write this...never would I have believed it... But I know now...shrivel their black souls! 
   That mage... he and my wife...they are in league, against me! I know not what wickedness they plan for me, but I must be careful... 
   I am a simple man; a man of steel...I fear that I will be helpless against the dark magics this Varanexus is working ... 
   I must not alarm my men until I have a plan of action...but I fear that time is growing short for me...
   I must find out who is loyal to me and prepare for the inevitable betrayal...

 You quickly turn to the last page and begin reading:
   "To you who reads this. Know that my wife has betrayed me.  In her lust for power, she has separated my body from my spirit; 
   trapping my spirit in the Ethereal Realm while combining my body with that of a dragon; in an experiment that--she believes--
   will produce the ultimate warrior. I knew that she and Varanexus were plotting against me, but alas, 
   I had no idea of the depths of their wickedness. Now, it is too late. This will be my last entry--
   I beg of you:  slay Lady Goland and avenge me! And may God have mercy on our souls..."
